june 11, 2008, Multiply, the herb garden

Today we planted the herbs. I ended up with 5 pupils aged 14 and 15 all planting herbs in this little garden just out side the front entrance.

I obviously can’t post the pictures of the puipils here, which is a bit of a shame but you will just have to take my word for it that they seemed to enjoy the experience and even agreed to go away and look up a few basic facts about the herbs they planted.

I am about to post these photos into the herb garden album, just to keep all the pictures together.

The music I chose to go with this is

‘This Land Is Your Land -- Arlo Guthrie and Pete Seeger’’ it seemed very fitting.

delete reply seanymph3 wrote on Jun 12, '08 These kids will remember this forever. This is great. I had my lil grand daughter help me plant my herb garden yrs ago in another house. She loved that so much she took it while in school and did her paper on herbs. When she told me that I was so proud.

Well done for being involved and for passing your enthusiasm onto the children :)) My middle daughter's school has just dome something similar in the last 12 months, and now one of the after-school clubs is called Eco-Club, where they help tend the plants, tidy the grounds, go pond-dipping and learn about their environment in general. Which herbs did you manage to plant? I am looking forward to regular installments now regarding the progress of this wonderful project! ;) :)))

delete reply edtrain5 wrote on Jun 11, '08 Hi Loretta... Tis a lovely herb garden. I hope no vandals decide to uproot the plants some night..... that would be a pity. For now, I'll simply presume that no harm will come to the plants and that your students shall know the joy of watching the plants grow... and know the joy of harvesting them. This is a wonderful idea. Ahhhhh and we must give credit to Woody Guthrie for writing this song. It's is a wonderful & memorable song for its melody, for the words that it uses and for the hope it gives to everyone. Woody and Pete were musical partners until Woody could no longer perform (ravaged by Huntington's Chorea). After Woody died, Pete took over as a surrogate father for Arlo, Woody's son. Pete is still alive and even performs on occasion despite his advanced age... I believe he's nearly ninety. (Arlo is now 60 and has shoulder length flowing, white hair.) Cheers, Peace........ Ed
